Be unconventional and accessorize your outfit with one of our 100% authentic, handmade Wayuu mochila bags!
Every bag is "made with love in every thread" and with your purchase we can help improve the living conditions of our Wayuu children and families in need of basic necessities, clean water, food, and power.
These amazing pieces of art are crafted by indigenous Wayuu women inhibiting the visually striking desert of the La Guajira Peninsula, which borders Northeastern Colombia and Northwest Venezuela. The beautiful patterns and colors represent their culture and environment.
Wayuu women are responsible for household chores so they are only able to crochet in between their household responsibilities which means it can take 10-15 days to crochet a single bag. Weavers also have different skill levels so some may finish a bag in more or less time, depending on the design complexity and skill of the weaver.
HIGHLIGHTS OF A SINGLE THREAD BAG:
Takes 2x longer to make than a double thread bag.
Patterns are much more intricate and include an elaborate bottom.
High-quality finishings (no-stretch strap, detailed drawstring, and crochet on the cap of the tassel are a few examples).
Lighter in weight and less dense due to the single thread versus double thread crocheting technique.
